Serialized TNG: Q Episodes.

Starting in 2006, a series of DVD collections were released under the name Star Trek: Fan Collective. These included episodes from across all the live-action Star Trek series that had aired up to then and focused on themes such as the Klingons, Q, and the Borg.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser, Joe Keegan, and Amy Nelson continue our series about the Star Trek: Fan Collective DVD sets with a look at the eight episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation that were part of the Q installment and how they play into serialized storytelling on TNG.

First Contacts in TNG.

To communicate with new life and new civilizations through first contact is one of the primary missions of a Starfleet crew and the crews of the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E are no exception. The first contacts that we see rarely seem to be easy, whether with space-faring jellyfish, subspace aliens kidnapping the crew, or the malevolent collective consciousness of the Borg, but it does make for a great discussion topic.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Justin Oser are joined by guest April Taylor to talk about first contacts in The Next Generation and what they tell us about one of Starfleet's most important missions. The discussion includes the episodes "Encounter at Farpoint," "Pen Pals," "Q Who," "Who Watches The Watchers," "First Contact," "Schisms," and "Phantasms" as well as the movie First Contact.

Keiko O'Brien.

Keiko O'Brien first appears in "Data's Day," a season four episode of The Next Generation in which she marries Miles O'Brien. Over the course of the 8 episodes of The Next Generation and 19 episodes of Deep Space Nine in which she appears, we see Keiko as a wife, a mother, a botanist, and a primary school teacher and we even learn a little bit about her family history. Keiko is far from a fan favorite, but what do we think about her when discussing the episodes she appears in and the arc of her character?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Jenn Tifft of the Snap Trek podcast to talk about Keiko O'Brien. The discussion includes Keiko's relationship with her husband, Miles O'Brien, on both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, her work as a botanist and school teacher, Keiko as a mother to her two children, what we think of her character overall in episodes spanning 10 seasons of Star Trek, and much more!

In The Next Generation, Jean-Luc Picard is a captain, a diplomat, and an explorer, but he is also an inspiration to his crew, to many characters that we meet during the show and the movies, and to multiple generations of Star Trek fans. Picard's power and influence for good flows just as much from his words as from his actions.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Joe Keegan, and Justin Oser list their three favorite Picard inspirational speeches from The Next Generation. Each host talks about why their picks are meaningful to them and important to The Next Generation and its millions of fans.

Favorite Non-human Species in TNG.

Non-human species have been important to Star Trek since its very beginning when viewers first saw the half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. There have been many non-human characters depicted in every series, from those that can be called humanoid to those that look and behave very differently from humans. Over the course of seven seasons and four movies, The Next Generation introduced us to both new non-human species that would become important across 24th century Star Trek as well as memorable non-human species that were only seen once.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by guest Nicholas Paul Collinson to list their three favorite non-human species on The Next Generation. Each participant talks about why the species they have chosen are meaningful to them and important to The Next Generation.

The Power of Words in TNG.

Star Trek has never shied away from taking advantage of the power of words, from Shakespeare to technobabble to inspirational speeches, and The Next generation is no exception. There have been many moments and episodes that have pushed our vocabulary, introduced us to works of literature, and taught us something new in the process.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Justin Oser are joined by guest Shoaib Mirza, Associate Producer of The Edge, to list their three favorite uses of words, language, and communication on The Next Generation. Undercover Missions.

Whilst Star Trek has always shown us a positive vision of the future, there have been times when stealth and disguise have been required. Through various planned and forced undercover missions, our heroes have deftly and secretly gone where no Romulan, Cardassian, Mintakan, or Malcorian has gone before - sometimes with mixed results.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan and Justin Oser are joined by guest Christos Giannaris to discuss some of the undercover missions in The Next Generation. The episodes discussed are “Who Watches the Watchers,” “First Contact,” “Unification I and II,” “Chain of Command, Parts 1 and 2,” and “Face of the Enemy."

Favorite Villains

Since its beginning in 1966, Star Trek has always had a wealth of villainous characters confronting our heroes. The Next Generation is no different, with its plethora of scallywags and scoundrels that try to do harm to the crew.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser list their three favorite villains in The Next Generation. Each host talks about why the villains discussed are great foils for our beloved characters and how their appearances impact The Next Generation.

Kurn.

In "Sins of the Father," we're introduced to Kurn, a stern Klingon exchange officer boarding the Enterprise-D to temporarily serve as first officer. We find out in the course of the episode that Kurn is actually Worf's brother and has brought news of a judgment by the Klingon High Council that will change both of their lives forever. In the course of three episodes of The Next Generation and one episode of Deep Space Nine, Kurn is tested again and again by the dramatic events happening within the Klingon Empire and between the sons of Mogh.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Justin Oser and Joe Keegan are joined by guest Pierre LaRocco to discuss the character of Worf's brother Kurn. The discussion includes his developing relationship to Worf, his changing place in Klingon society, and his development as a recurring character. Each participant talks about Kurn's four appearances with a view to having a deeper appreciation of the character and Klingon society in general.

Favorite Star Trek Memorabilia.

Star Trek memorabilia is almost as old as Star Trek itself. Over the last nearly 53 years, there has been a huge variety of Star Trek items collected by fans the world over, from action figures to photos to collectible cards to screen-used props and costumes and everything in between.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser talk about their three favorite pieces of Star Trek memorabilia that they own. Joe also introduces a new segment on Earl Grey, the Scottish Language Lesson, and the hosts then each choose a piece of Star Trek memorabilia that is tacky or tasteless.

The Lost Episodes, Part 8.

There are many scripts, script outlines, and episode and movie concepts that never made it onto the screen on The Next Generation. These lost episodes can provide a fascinating window into what might have been, what characters and concepts ended up being modified and used later, and into the behind-the-scenes writing process.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Justin Oser, and Joe Keegan discuss the never-produced season 1 episode "Genius Is Pain" by Tracy Tormé and a never-produced version of Generations by Maurice Hurley. The Lost Episodes is a continuing series that will cover many unfilmed episodes and movie concepts over the course of the seven seasons and four movies of The Next Generation.

Serialized TNG, Part 1.

Starting in 2006, a series of DVD collections were released under the name Star Trek: Fan Collective. These collections included episodes across all live action Star Trek series that had aired up to that time, centered around themes like Klingons, Q, and the Borg. We're starting a new series on Earl Grey to discuss episodes of The Next Generation included on these collections and to look at them as if they were serialized story arcs.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Justin Oser, and Joe Keegan, talk about four episodes of The Next Generation that were part of the Klingon-centered release of the Star Trek: Fan Collective DVD collections. The episodes discussed are "A Matter of Honor," "Sins of the Father," "Redemption," and "Redemption II." This is part of a continuing series on Earl Grey to talk about episodes from the Star Trek: Fan Collectiveand how we see those as part of a serialized storyline.

Enterprise-D Blueprints.

Four months before the release of the movie First Contact and the introduction of a new Enterprise, Star Trek: The Next Generation USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints was released. Featuring 13 beautifully detailed, large poster-sized blueprints covering all 42 decks, fans were delighted to finally see many of the spaces on their beloved Enterprise-D about which they had always wondered.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson, Justin Oser, and new host Joe Keegan, take an in-depth look at the amazing labor of love that is the Enterprise-D blueprints, which were released in 1996. The discussion includes the appeal of seeing blueprints, how the usage of space shows the ship is made for comfort, the incredible contributors to the blueprints and design of the Enterprise-D, and our excitement for seeing Cetacean Ops and so many more wonderful places!

Favorite Conflict Resolution Moments in TNG.

Conflicts and how those conflicts are resolved are an essential part of storytelling. Gene Roddenberry famously said that in The Next Generation, there should be no conflict among the characters that we follow. The writers often expressed that this was a challenge in creating stories for the show. However, we do see plenty of conflicts with outside forces and even some between the characters on the Enterprise-D and the Enterprise-E. How those conflicts are resolved within the episodes and movies of The Next Generation are an important aspect of the show's enduring appeal.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Shoaib Mirza, Associate Producer of The Edge, to list their three favorite conflict resolution moments from The Next Generation. Each participant talks about why the moments discussed are meaningful to them and important to understanding the characters on The Next Generation.

Riker's Command Offers.

William T. Riker serves as first officer on the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E for a total of 15 years during seven seasons of The Next Generation and four movies. In that time, he is offered command of a Starfleet ship three times and declines each time before finally accepting command of the USS Titan. Why does Riker keep turning down command offers and what do the times we do see him in command say about what he would be like in command of his own ship?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Brian Meloche, Associate Producer of The Edge, to talk about Riker's command offers. The discussion includes talking about why he declines offers to command three different Starfleet ships, why he accepts command of the USS Titan, and the different times that we see Riker in command of the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E.

"Gambit."

"Gambit, Parts I and II" are episodes toward the beginning of season 7 of The Next Generation that were unlike anything previously aired in a Star Trek series. After a nearly 30-year ban by Gene Roddenberry on episodes focusing on space pirates, here were two episodes that largely take place on a mercenary ship engaged in piracy. The space pirate ship, however, is really a means to explore how a number of the main characters deal with different roles and situations than we're used to seeing.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by Chris Tribuzio, Associate Producer of Earl Grey, to talk about the two-part "Gambit" episode. The discussion includes Picard's initial absence, space pirates, the Picard/Riker and Worf/Data dynamics, Robin Curtis as Tallera, and much more!

Dennis Madalone was the stunt coordinator for seasons 3 through 7 of The Next Generation and all of Deep Space Nine and Voyager. He also did stunts and played many characters from the first season of The Next Generation all the way to the final season of Voyager. In this episode of Earl Grey, host Justin Oser interviews Dennis Madalone about his role as the stunt coordinator for 19 seasons of Star Trek, including 5 seasons of The Next Generation, all 7 seasons of Deep Space Nine and all 7 seasons of Voyager, as well as the many stunts and acting roles that he did on Star Trek from 1987 to 2001. The discussion includes his lifelong love of stunts, stories from the hundreds of Star Trek episodes that he worked on, which alien makeup that he wore was the greatest challenge, and much more!

Section 31 in TNG.

Section 31 first appeared in the Deep Space Nine season 6 episode "Inquisition," which aired in April 1998. Section 31 appeared in 2 more episodes of Deep Space Nine, 4 episodes of Enterprise, the movie Into Darkness, and 5 episodes of Discovery (so far).
What would Section 31 have looked like if it had been introduced on The Next Generation instead of Deep Space Nine? In the episodes and movies of The Next Generation that we did get, are there hints of Section 31 that we can find?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss Section 31 and what it may have looked like on The Next Generation. Topics discussed include our thoughts on how Section 31 has been portrayed in Star Trek, how Section 31 might have been different if it were first introduced on The Next Generation, and the clues that we see in several episodes and movies that we think may point to Section 31's involvement.

Death in TNG.

Although we don't see deaths on The Next Generation very often, when a character does die, it can have a profound impact on the viewer. How are the effects of death portrayed on the show and what does it mean in our own lives?

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss death on The Next Generation. Topics discussed include how religion and death are shown, how mourning is depicted, deaths we wish hadn't happened, and how the age and importance of the character who dies may affect how we feel about it.

"Masks."

The season seven episode "Masks" is often seen as one of the worst episodes of The Next Generation, but it does have its fans that love its unorthodox storytelling style.  Written by Joe Menosky, who is well-known for his frequently unusual Star Trek episodes, "Masks" has a lot of layers and interpretations to explore.

In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Amy Nelson and Justin Oser are joined by guest Christopher D. Littlefield to talk about The Next Generation episode "Masks." The discussion includes talking about Joe Menosky's original concept, Data as a conduit for multiple characters, how we interpret the story being told, whether the episode is actually like a video game, and much more! This is an in-depth conversation and we think you'll enjoy the discussion, whether or not you're a fan of "Masks."

Troi's Dishonor.

Star Trek never shies away from an issue - usually tackling things such as racism, sexism, the evils of war, and human rights violations, with assault and rape being no exception. The way Counselor Troi's assaults were portrayed on The Next Generation as a psychic rape instead of a physical rape brings the issue to the forefront of conversation of the issue.

In this episode of Earl Grey, host Amy Nelson is joined by Zach Moore of Standard Orbit to discuss the character of Troi and her violations within specific episodes as well as the movie Nemesis. We debate the issues of consent and intent of a perpetrator. We also consider if Troi's empathic ability is a vulnerability or disadvantage which therefore makes her a victim.

Weapons of TNG, Part 2.

The primary mission of the crew of The Next Generation is one of exploration. However, they need the means to defend themselves from any danger or combat situations that they encounter. Just about every species that they interact with also has weapons of various kinds at their disposal. What kinds of weapons do we see and what do the types and abilities of those weapons say about both Federation and non-Federations species?
In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser discuss the various weapons that are seen in the episodes and movies of The Next Generation and what insights we can gain from comparing Federation and non-Federation weapons. This episode focuses on ship weapons, including phasers, photon torpedoes, disruptors, and bombs. This is Part 2 in a two part series - Part 1 covered hand weapons on Earl Grey 257.
